about

2022 marks the tenth year for Unit 137 sound system and record label. To celebrate the anniversary three of the founding producers, Ed West, Hylu and Sleepy Time Ghost, have created a three track EP. The 10 Years EP demonstrates the breadth of electronic influences that make Unit 137 such a unique sound system. Based in Hither Green (Lewisham, London), Unit 137 has been carving out a name for itself as a sound system pushing bass orientated music since 2012. Unit 137 understand the influence sound system culture has had on music in the UK and across the world, and has built an ethos that accepts difference, pushes creativity, whilst remaining respectful and knowledgeable about the culture’s roots.

The EP starts with a heavy dancehall inspired track from Ed West. Aptly titled, Daddy, what are dreams for?, the track fires off surreal sci-fi-esque samples and synth lines between driving kicks and bass. Hylu steps in for the second track with a percussive led, dark, dance floor roller. BUr5elf! features samples of vocalist and crew member, Deemas J (recorded at Lewisham Sound System Trail in May 2022), alongside djembe rifts and synth melodies. Sleepy Time Ghost closes the EP with a rolling steppas tune. At it’s core, Decade Riddim has a warm bass-line that washes through the track, transporting the listener between catching melodies, percussion and vocal samples.

Ed West is a producer, drummer and DJ. His music is an ever-changing recipe of the sounds he hears around him. The influence of Jamaican sound system culture is clear in his work and it echoes in jungle, hip-hop, dubstep & grime, which are all ingredients in the same pot. Part of Unit 137 sound system and also drummer in UK reggae band ‘The Drop’ Ed continues to work with various artists out of his studio in Lewisham.

Hylu is a DJ, producer, engineer and the founder of Unit 137 sound system. Hylu creates music with a wide range of influences; reggae, dub, jungle, hip-hop, dubstep, electronic and jazz can be heard in his sound. He has remixed tracks for various artists and has released on numerous labels, including; Big Dada, Moonshine Recordings, Tru Thoughts, Black Butter & Dub-Stuy Records. He has also released a number of successful singles and EPs through his own label, Unit 137.

Sleepy Time Ghost is a London based producer working out of his studio in Lewisham, SE London. He specialises in reggae, dub, dancehall, hip-hop, jungle and anything in between. Sleepy also runs his own label ‘Bun Dem Out’ records. His prolific output over the past decade is peppered with features from vocalists including: Mr. Cheeks (lost boys), Lutan Fyan, Macka B, Rodney P, Daddy Freddy, Little Roy, Ras Demo, to mention a few. His releases are out on labels including: Tru Thoughts, Nice Up!, Congo Natty Bass and Unit 137.
